Watch The Video Below!
Introduction
One of the best ways that you can utilize your time is in prayer but that's only a true statement if you are praying properly.
Wouldn't it be great if we had just one passage of Scripture not some law or multiple chapters but just one small passage of Scripture that taught us
from God's perspective. That Taught us from the words of Messiah himself on how to pray. If we could understand
that and we can and if we're bold enough to apply that to our life it would be something that would
be revolutionizing changing transformation and this is what we have in this passage of scripture
from the book of Matthew and chapter 6 we have the Lord's Prayer many of us we can recite it
by memory but the question is this do we really understand it do we comprehend why these words
are here and are we applying that in our life, so our life is indeed transformed through the
power of prayer well with that said take out your Bible and look with me to the book of Matthew in
Matthew 6 verse 9
chapter 6 the book of Matthew and chapter 6 now we're going to begin in verse 9 we started this
verse last week where there is a command and just that a command from Messiah look carefully at this
passage we read here therefore thus you shall pray not a suggestion he is telling us this is the way
that you are to pray and all of our prayers and we can pray about a variety of things but all of
our prayers ultimately need to align themselves with this truth these objectives this revelation
it's how we pray what we should pray for and the revelation that we need to have when we pray so he
says once more verse 9 therefore thus you shall pray our Father the one in heaven now why does
it says our father first and foremost we've talked about this many times the concept of father what
should enter into our mind provider in prayer we find God's provision if we're not a person that
Our Father the one in heaven
prays faithfully don't expect much in the way of provision but once we become committed and if you
are in charge of some ministry you are a leader of a congregation some study group whatever it
might be realize how important prayer is because you as in leadership you one of the number one
things that people who are in leadership think about is the resources do I have enough do this
organization are we going to meet our financial obligations and one of the ways that that is met
is through prayer when we pray we can expect God's provision if we pray properly and our
whole purpose in this study today is to dedicate this lesson to learning how to pray effectively
therefore, the session our father the one in heaven he's our provider father provider but
notice the one in heaven I'm translating this very literally the one in heaven he's above us
it speaks about his authority but also he's in a different dimension and therefore we just don't go
to him like we go to a friend for a help we don't just think of him as our brother or our daddy so
to speak but he is our Father who is in heaven that term heaven should immediately convey to
us respect so does father but our Heavenly Father he demands and and deserves greater respect so our
Father the one in heaven and then we say something hallowed be your name that were hallowed just in
an old ancient English word for what well the word we see there is a word holy we're saying here holy
is your name now that means that God is a God who has purpose holiness is always seen connected to
holiness and sanctification
purpose it is also connected to sanctification. Sanctification is being set apart for a specific
purpose so when we say holy is your name hallowed be your name what we're saying is this God's
character God's character is manifested in our life through his purposes it is only when our
character resembles God's then and only then are we going to be equipped for the purposes of God
so one of the things that this prayer teaches me is when I go before God I need to pray God
I want to reflect your character your attributes your nature how you behave I want to demonstrate
those same things in my life that's my objectives if that's not where it begins then everything
falls to pieces so we say God holy is your name continue on he says your kingdom come your will
be done notice one of the first things he speaks about is kingdom not just that that kingdom there
but we want it to come now we need to understand this in two ways first of all there's that future
future fulfillment
fulfillment we want the kingdom of God to be established obviously but we also want Kingdom
Authority Kingdom reality Kingdom power Kingdom character to be to be manifested that's what
we're praying for that things are brought under a kingdom authority there's someone who's sick we
want that Kingdom power to be brought into that situation that Kingdom power heals restores it
cast out those things that are contrary to the will of God, so your kingdom come and notice your
will be done there is that inherent relationship between the will of God and the establishment of
his kingdom and the reality of his kingdom being manifested in a situation so if I'm not interested
in the will of God here again stop because you have disqualified yourself from really being
a man or a woman of Prayer first and foremost prayers that's going to be anointed by God that
is going to be responded to by God with power and his mighty provision they have to be related to
his will so we have a kingdom objective, and that kingdom objective is always a manifestation of the
kingdom objective
will of God he says and your will let it be as in heaven and upon earth verse 11 now when that
is what we're praying for sincerely objectively I want a holy perspective to be realized in my
life in this situation and this problem in this whatever I want holiness to be manifested I want
Kingdom Authority to be given that power I want God's will to be done it's only when we have that
as our mindset that we move on to verse 11 what is verse 11 speaking of well look at it carefully he
says our daily bread sustenance don't expect God to provide don't expect God to meet your
daily bread sustenance
needs don't expect him to be a generous God if we're not interested in holiness if we're not
interested in his will and we're not committed to his kingdom when we say Oh his kingdom well
when it comes that's fine but but I'm not really interested in that I'm not really understanding
that that's kind of a foreign thing to me and and I'm not dealing with him and his purpose is now
I'm more concerned with my purposes his character well I'll just do the best I can and move on when
we have a mindset like that and let me tell you many people do they're not searching this book
they don't understand this book they don't know what God's up to prophecy they kind of scoff at
and when you are in that mindset what God is saying is my daily provision you're gonna have
to get it someplace else I'm not going to meet your needs I'm not going to respond as I want to
respond because we are rejecting foundational truth why he has saved us why he has made us
into his family verse 11 our daily bread give to us when today look for God's provision for today
Gods provision
understand that God one of the reasons why he does not give and we'll talk about an organization a
ministry I mean it's rare that someone looks and said you know what it's it's January 1st
I have everything I need for this upcoming year the budgets been met I don't need to worry about
all the resources they are already provided now that doesn't happen we are struggling in prayer
and through prayer for God to meet what tomorrow's needs know he says give us today our daily bread
and then he says something else if we want this provision yes we need to be people who are
concerned with the will of God but also there's another aspect and that is a relationship with God
a relationship that is established by forgiveness never underestimate the forgiveness the power for
Relationship with God
goodness and what forgiveness does for others when you forgive them and when you when you have been
forgiven by God forgiveness it is wonderful and therefore he says in this passage very clearly
verse 12 and forgive us our debts our unfulfilled obligations and it's a relationship to to sin as
also we forgive our debtors so those things that we have not fulfilled to you those things that
we have violated those things that that are wrong that we have in our life against you God or others
we ask forgiveness but that forgiveness won't be there for us if we're not willing to what forgive
our debtors those who have acted unkindly to us now one of the things that that happens is and I
realize that this is a a controversial statement for some but but hear it out it's so important
nothing happens in a vacuum everything that takes place has to do with the Providence of God either
Gods providence
God is the cause of it or he is allowed it and it he's allowed it it is for a purpose in your life
so let's say someone does something unkind to me we all have that unfortunately sometimes I'm the
one you're the one who've done the unkind thing but in this case someone has done something unkind
not nice to me now God allowed that to happen not saying that he caused it but he allowed it
to happen and he allowed you to become aware of it you have realized this person has not been
nice to me this person has sinned against me this person has offended me in some way the fact that
you are aware of it has a purpose and anointing to it why so that you can forgive that person and
remember the forgiveness that God has given to you we need to live constantly because we're in
need of it constantly we need to remember God's forgiveness so when someone acts unkindly to me
when someone sins against me the first thing that I do is say to myself well God the fact that you
have allowed that and that you have caused it to come to my attention means I need to remember how
much I'm indebted to you how much I'm in need of your forgiveness so God can use that for
good to remind me of what he's saying here we're supposed to be forgiving and when I remember that
it makes forgiving them so much easier not that I hope I have to forgive them but what he says
Unforgiveness
here if I'm unwilling I'm not going to get his forgiveness in a given situation it's not talking
about salvation that we lose our salvation but when we are walking in unforgiveness it has an
adverse effect in our life so we want to forgive and experience God's goodness verse verse 13 he
says here and do not lead us into temptation again this is a a controversial statement but we need to
understand it properly and that is God does not cause temptation God does not say I'm going to
take this person so that they're tempted to sin that's not what it's saying what it's saying is
Dont lead me into temptation
this God do not allow me that's the implication of the statement do not lead me into temptation
God do not allow me to be taken into temptation shield me from that we don't want to experience
temptation so we're praying to God God keep me from this hour of temptation he goes on
but deliver us from what evil now do you see how the scripture is is working together two
things are being taught this this sentence which says lead me not into temptation but deliver me
Deliver me from evil
from evil we have something God is teaching us that when we are encountering temptation and we
do all the time amen we experience that desire something happens that that that arise is up
this passion that we have for whatever it might be this activity of that activity but we are
tempted to do something and what he wants us to realize is that that temptation brings evil when
it says deliver me from evil he's saying if you succumb to this temptation not just that you do
evil but that through temptation you are going to experience evil if you succumb to it you do evil
and you're going to receive evil now why is that important for this reason it is when I realized
that succumbing to temptation not only am i doing that which is evil but I'm going to encounter evil
Deliver me from temptation
we're gonna pray that much more Dillons - when temptation happens to be individuals that flee
quickly so a very important passage here when he says verse 13 and do not lead us into temptation
but deliver us from evil because years is the kingdom now he's killing us a principle how
do i how do I overcome temptation how do I not experience it or have victory over it well the
first thing he talks about is the kingdom that God you have a kingdom when I am undergoing temptation
every individual does so in fact believers do so more than unbelievers why for unbelievers they
just see it as an opportunity we understand that it's a wrong opportunity it is something that is
against the purpose of God the plan of God what we're being tempted to do and what where does
the solution the victory over temptation begins fleeing obviously but sometimes we're too weak
to even flee so what do we have to begin to think about right here Kingdom when I am Kingdom minded
Things of Kingdom
when I am thinking of the things of Kingdom you know what I'm going to realize how pale
in comparison how worthless how counterfeit how corrupt the things of this world are now
when we're dealing with temptation temptation is getting something of the world write that down
make a notice of that all temptation is getting something of the world either through worldly ways
or that which is worldly in and of itself and when we are tempted we need to begin to do just what
the scripture says four years is the kingdom God you have a kingdom and that Kingdom and
the things connected to that Kingdom are so much better these things are false they're counterfeit
they're corrupt they're deceiving they're lying I want the kingdom I don't want to settle for an
imitation I don't want to settle for something that is fleeing that's good to leave me in the
end feeling worst and empty no I want something that is satisfying what's that Kingdom promises
so he says yours is the kingdom and then what and the power if you want kingdom power in your
life become Kingdom mind it's just that simple you want Kingdom power think things according to
Kingdom Power
the kingdom when you're striving for the kingdom wanting to bring a kingdom character a kingdom
reality a kingdom authority into the situation when that's your objective what's he saying here
he also has power for yours is the kingdom the power and when that power is manifested kingdom
power is manifested what's the outcome what's the next thing he says in glory for thy is the kingdom
the power and the glory for how long here's the difference for ever amen believe it it's true
that's what Amon means believe it because it's true now here's the takeaway for us I'm in a
Temptation
moment of temptation and what do I do I begin to think what got what the enemy is tempting me with
what he is promising what he's enticing me with it is false it is a counterfeit it is going to leave
me empty and whatever gratification that I have it is temporal it's gonna come and it's good to
go and in the end it's going to bring about what did we learn in the previous verse it's going to
bring about evil when I succumb to temptation I am inviting evil into my life that's what what
Messiah is saying here but when I and King didn't mind it I have access to the power and that power
Blessing of faithfulness
is going to manifest God's glory that's the blessing of faithfulness glory is manifested
and what does he say he says here not only that but it is for ever verse 14 for if you forgive
the trespasses of men he says I will also forgive whose eye your heavenly Father will also forgive
you but if you do not forgive the trespasses of men nor will your heavenly Father forgive your
trespasses what an important statement that we need to be people that are indeed forgiving in
nature forgiving quick because if we don't our lack of forgiveness is going to have an adverse
effect upon us and realize something what he's saying the reason why he ends this prayer in this
way is because our relationship with others are so critical in our relationship with God broken
relationships conflict with others I mean we know marriage wise it says that when a man a husband is
is that odds with his wife there is not a healed relationship it says that it hinders his prayers
well that's true but realize when I'm at odds with other people it also has an effect upon
my prayer life now where are we going to well we won't have time but look briefly at verse 16 and
verse 16 we go we've been talking about prayer how to pray now what does he deal with he talks about
fasting and we see something we see fasting and prayer always go together see some of the Greek
Fasting prayer
manuscripts they will talk about fasting but they won't have the word and prayer if you look at the
ancient the Texas Receptus it does have fasting and prayer why a Jewish perspective culturally
biblically speaking there is never a fast it's not with prayer why see if our fasting is I'm just not
gonna eat we're not fasting we're just on a diet that's all it is there's nothing spiritual related
to it whatsoever no fasting not eating always is for us in regard to our prayer life fasting and
prayer they go together I fast because it is going to impact my ability to pray I am NOT going to be
trusting in my flesh because my flesh is going to be worn out because I'm hungry I'm empty no
fasting demands that I rely upon the spirit not the body and prayers that are going to be the
Community fasts
most anointed are not prayers that are motivated or or place the pawn that which is of the natural
but that was us is on the supernatural so he says here let's begin verse 16 he says and whenever you
shall fast and the implication is we should be fasting now there are community fasts when we
do so in a public way we gather the community fast and there's certain days for example on
on Purim and if you don't know about this this has to do with the book of Esther and Esther we
know fasted three days and therefore before that holiday comes up when we remember the victory that
God gave the people in the days of Mordecai and Esther in remembering that there's a community
fasts and there's other times within the calendar the biblical calendar and we see that in the book
of Zechariah he mentions for fast days and these fast days are as well they are accompanied with
Scripture reading and prayer so there is no fasting without prayer and we're going to see
that in this scripture once again and whenever you fess do not be as and again he says it do
not be as the hypocrites meaning this we confess in an improper way and in the same measure that
a proper fess is going to have a magnificent and a massive change in our situation and in
our prayers when we fast improperly and improper fast is going to have a massive inadequate action
something that is not pleasing to God something that's not going to accomplish its objective and
that's why it's so important that we learn how to fast properly and that's what we're going to
talk about next week when we move on in this sixth chapter of the book of Matthew learning
